Mike Espy is the democratic candidate for the vacant senate seat left by former Senator Thad Cochran. He is a native of Mississippi and if seated will be the first African American Senator in the State’s history. A graduate of Howard University School of Law, Mike is not new to politics. A member of the Democratic Party, Espy was the U.S. Representative for Mississippi’s 2nd congressional district from 1987 to 1993. He defeated a two-term Republican to become the first African-American to represent Mississippi at the federal level since Reconstruction. He served as the 25th United States Secretary of Agriculture from 1993 to 1994. He was both the first African American and first person from the Deep South to hold the position. He is an experienced attorney with Morgan & Morgan, where he worked with several black farmers’ advocacy groups and the National Black Farmers Association to represented black farmers in the notable Pigford lawsuit.

MS State legislator running for US Senate. Endorsed by MS Legislative Black Caucus, Sierra Club, End Citizens United, labor. Wants to remove confederate battle flag symbol from all official state symbols. Supported legislation to establish online voter registration (HB 373). Supported legislation to prevent gerrymandering and voter disenfranchisement (HB 299). He supported legislation to prohibit incarcerating people bc of inability to pay, and supported legislation requiring police to report civil asset forfeiture online. He wants to raise the minimum wage, and supports two years of free tuition as community colleges, in addition to state tax exemption for college grads who stay in MS 2 - 3 years after graduating. He supports ACA and medicaid expansion. When it comes to the concerns of immigration and incarceration, David Baria is moving progressively, and is a candidate who is likely to be open to challenge and being pushed toward more progressive stances.
